Bigleaf Avens or Geum is a native perennial that grows in habitats ranging from forest understory to open, disturbed sites. It is found on the east coast as well as throughout the western United States.

The leaves are quite unique. Small, rounded side leaflets terminate in a broad (up to three inches), 3-lobed, kidney-shaped pale green leaflet. Stem leaves are smaller. Leaves persist throughout the winter.

The flowers are borne on long stalks in flat-topped clusters; they consist of five bright yellow petals with turned back sepals. They mature to bristly seed heads.

This species is cold and drought-tolerant, requiring very little attention.

These plants are grown from divisions.
