Shrubby Penstemon is a native of the northwestern United States where it is most commonly found in middle elevations on exposed, often rocky sites. In Washington, this species is most common in the eastern Cascades. The shrubs are low and rounded, and the bright green elliptical leaves are evergreen. The largest leaves (up to two inches) are crowded on the lower stems, while the flowering stems bear smaller, more widely-spaced leaves.

Lovely, blue-violet flowers, up to three inches in length and arranged in simple racemes cover the plants in summer, making this a very showy perennial.

Shrubby Penstemon does well in sunny or partially shaded sites and prefers well-drained soil.

These plants are grown from cuttings and are in their first season.
