Gray Pine is a native California species, where it grows in the foothills of the Sierras and interior ranges. This is the common pine tree seen as one descends from the mountains of northern California onto the valley floor.

Gray Pine has an airy, open form, and may reach 70 over feet in height in its native habitat, with a rapid growth rate. Up to 17 inches in length, the flexible bluish-gray needles are borne 3 to a bundle. The bark is dark gray and furrowed on older trees.

In addition to the pale needles, Gray Pine is distinguished by the large cones. Up to 10 inches in length, they are slightly egg-shaped with large scales that narrow into a sharp tip. The seeds are large and edible.

Tolerant of drought and cold, with its open form, this easy-care species is a beautiful and distinctive addition to a Northwest landscape.

These trees are grown from seed. Most are in their first season. There is one large, three-year old tree.
