Nootka Rose is a native rose to the west coast states and British Columbia, with a range that extends to Alaska. Rapid-growing, it may grow to over six feet although is typically found as smaller specimens.

The large, rose-colored flowers are flat-faced, with inch-long petals, often notched. The flowers are borne singly and are very showy above the dark green leaves; they are fragrant and offset with a yellow center composed of many stamens. The leaves consist of 5 or 7 slightly hairy, inch-long leaflets.

In autumn, the flowers mature to bright red "hips", typically more than a half-inch long, adding to the appeal of the plants. The hips remain on the plant throughout the winter and can be used in teas.

Tolerant of a range of conditions, this rose is best in a sunny site, although it will grow in partial shade as well. Providing habitat for birds, it will spread in open locations, and is undoubtedly the showiest of the native rose species.
